Watermain Construction

Start Date: 02 Oct 06 End Date: 01 Oct 09 Status: In Progress

Lakeshore Engineering Services, Inc has been retained by the City of Detroit, Detroit Water and Sewerage Department as the Construction Manager at Risk for the replacement of 120,000 LF of water transmission system throughout the City of Detroit. Existing system was old and vulnerable to frequent water main breaks costing the City large maintenance and repair bills.

Lakeshore was responsible for the removal and replacement of the existing water transmission forcemain network and associated gate wells and valves, as demanded by the system design. Fire hydrants were also replaced with new break-away type hydrants, and existing customers’ lead services were restored with new copper lines. Field records, as-build drawings, and QA/QC program was maintained by Lakeshore throughout the performance period of the project.

The execution of the project required extensive coordination with local utilities authorities and the coordination with DWSD interdepartmental units, specifically at times of utilities conflicts with the proposed new system rout of installation. Public relations and interaction with residents was maintained by Lakeshore during temporary water shut off events.

As part of the Lakeshore commitment to the development of the City’s local economy, the firm teamed up with a host of local Contractors, and has hired and trained Detroit resident engineers and inspectors to oversee and execute the Construction and Management Operations.
